Follow Your Dreams, They Said.

How do you follow your dreams, when you also have to worry about being an adult? Paying your bills on time, saving money for a down payment on a house (who am I kidding, a house? More like a 500 sq.ft. apartment), climbing the corporate ladder to secure your future, along with all the other worries of adulting.

Where do you have the time or the resources to actually follow your dreams, whatever it may be?

As I sit here, typing this letter, I’m smiling cheek to cheek (as well as being scared sh*tless), knowing that in a few days, my world will change, drastically. This will be the biggest voluntary change I’ve ever made in my life. I’m so excited to say, I’m leaving my Monday to Friday job to pursue music. I’m following my dreams. EEEEE!!

For those who don’t know me, my name is Marie. I’m a singer, and have been singing professionally, in front of crowds, be it 10 or 75,000 people, for 13 years. Throughout those 13 years, I have also been working a Monday to Friday job, trying to climb the corporate ladder within the marketing realm, specifically in real estate.

I do admit, the job I’m leaving now was a dream job when I first joined the team. The perfect atmosphere for creativity – open space office, like-minded individuals with an environment ripe for collaboration and teamwork, a kickass corporate culture that bumped 90’s rap & R&B in the office all day long, and they allowed their employees to bring their dogs to work – bonus! I love dogs! Everything was perfect, but that powerful force, that higher calling, was pulling me back into the direction of music.

The struggle was, and still is, very real. I have cried more in the past three weeks than I have in the past 10 years. All those “adulting” worries are still there, but I’ve taken steps to ensure I’m not going to flounder or become a starving musician. This has been a decision in the works for a long time….and I think I’ve been subconsciously preparing myself for this day to come.

It always comes back to music. Music is my life, and following the path of music is my dream. I have been a working musician for 13 years, yes, but out of all the songs I perform on stage, I can only proudly say I’ve created 8. Only 8!! I want to create music, I want to create a legacy for myself, not just sing other people’s songs for the rest of my life.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I have a talent that not a lot of other people have. It’s my duty to use this talent because I’m lucky enough to have it. It would be a shame if I didn’t. I would be living a life of regrets, and life is too short for regrets.

I’m fortunate enough to be able to say I'm doing it. I'm following my dreams. I hope that one day the stars will align for you, and you’ll get to tell me that you did the same.

Next step: start writing. Also, take advantage of the last days of my motorcycle insurance.

Love,

Marie
